Tiny pieces of chocolate! Who doesn’t like that? In the Netherlands we eat a lot of chocolate sprinkles: we call them hagelslag and it is a very popular sandwich topping. In most countries, chocolate sprinkles are only used as topping for cake, for example on cupcakes. But in the Netherlands big packages are sold, and we eat this on our sandwiches every day.

It is common to eat hagelslag sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. To make sure that the sprinkles don’t fall off when we eat, we use some butter so that they stick to the bread. Besides various chocolate sprinkles such as milk chocolate and dark chocolate, we also have anise and fruit flavored ones. All of those are used for sandwiches. And not only children like chocolate on their bread, adults eat this as well!
